Griping the Club With your Top Hand (Glove Hand)
1. Let your right hand hang down naturally with your palm facing inwards toward the golf club
2. Let the club sit on the base of your little finger and the middle of the index finger
3. Finish the movement by placing the palm on the side of the grip, wrap your fingers around the grip, place your hand on top with your thumb pointing towards the ground. When doing this, do not cover the end of the grip with your hand
There are a couple of checkpoints that you should have with this hand
- You have created a V with your thumb and index finger
- When the club is front of you, you should be able to draw a line from the opposite shoulder all the way to the vertex of the V you created
- Another checkpoint is when the club is in front of you, you should be able to see your knuckles of your index and middle finger and the logo of your golf velcro strap
Griping the Club With your Bottom hand
1. Similary to the glove hand have it hang down naturally with your palm facing alightly inward towards the clubs grip
At this point you can create another checkpoint of drawing a diagonal line from the base of your index finger to the bottom of your palm
2. Place the diagonal line we created against the thumb of the top hand, then wrap the fingers around the grip, and place the squishy part of your hand on to the top of the glove hand
3. The bottom hand should create another V with your index finger and thumb, you should be able draw a line from your left shoulder (left handed players) all the way down to the vertex of that V.
What Happens at the Back Of the Grip?
There are a variety of ways players grip the back of their clubs, but there are three main ways people grip it which are:
Baseball/Ten Finger Grip
|
Overlap Grip
|
Interlocking grip
|
For these grip style make sure you choose one that is most comfortable to you, don't pick the one your favourite golfer uses.
How Hard Should you Grip the Club?
When holding the club it is very important to have a very netural grip strength
- A strong grip will cause you to put the club face down at impact causing the ball to hook to the right
- A weak grip will cause you to put the club face up at impact causing the ball to slice the to the left
- A neutral grip will have straight club face at impact causing the ball to go straight
Mistakes People Make With their Golf Grips
- People tend to grip the club way to hard when hitting the ball. They must keep a neutral grip!
- People tend to have the club run through the middle of the palm of the hand with either both hands or just one hand. This causes you to move the club very awkwardly when swinging
- Players tend to hold the club too clockwise or counterclockwise causing a strong or weaker grip
4. Some beginner players tend to have to much seperation between their two hands, they should be close together
How Important Is the grip?
The grip of the golf club is one of the weirdest feelings in golf and sports in general because it is so sensitive once you first start or if you're making a grip change. It is so important that your grip is spot on because it is the steering wheel of your golf club. In other words, your hands are responsible moving the club inwards and outwards. When this is done incorrectly you will have to compensate in your swing to make the ball go straight, which makes the swing much harder and more complex.
